Update 16th January 2010: 1.33b01NA has been released.
D-link have released a new beta firmware for the DIR-655 in the hopes that it will fix an undisclosed SharePort issue.
Changelog:
- This code can be used with all hardware revisions of the DIR-655
- This code only addresses the shareport issue
- The attached Shareport utility will only work with this version firmware
I don’t know what SharePort issue they are referring to and I have not tested this myself.
Once again this firmware WILL NOT DOWNGRADE to pre 1.3x firmwares so if you are on a pre 1.3x firmware then it is suggested that you stay put because chances are you will only have more issues and you can’t go back.
This firmware is beta, it is a test release, it may break/brick your router for no reason.
As the changelog suggests there is a new SharePort utility included that will supposedly only work with this version, I don’t know if SX Virtual Link works with this firmware, but for the record it has a version number of 5.6.2 making it newer than SX Virtual Link.

Update 27th of October 2009: I have decided to test this firmware out as some users have reported that there are some small wireless improvements, I will leave any findings in the comments below. I will also try a SharePort stability test as the longest I have been able to keep a single SharePort connection alive has been about half an hour.
Well I have done a test using my usb wireless mouse for half the day and it has been rock solid, everything went perfectly smooth and it hasn’t disconnected yet.

I have the DIR-655 running with 1.32NA. I tried this firmware but after doing the update it still says 1.32NA. Any idea why it won’t upgrade? Hardware version is A4.
Never mind. Found out it is the newer version. It shows 1.32NA with date 2009/08/27. This is the date of build 04.
This version is better, but it still loses its connection, just less often. Sometimes rebooting the router restores it, other times it takes a “cold” router reboot, and sometimes a reinstall of the shareport utility alone fixes it (without any router reboot).
Mine has been on for 7 days at it’s current uptime and SharePort still works fine when I connect something to it, it seems there are a wide variety of experiences with this firmware.
For me with an HP Laseret p1005 1.32NA is better but still not reliable enough for real use. More frustrating in a way because it almost works. For anyone thinking a DIR655 with shareport is going to give them usable wireless printing i’d have to say keep looking.
Hi I recently updated the firmware to the latest beta version of 1.32 and also installed the share port supplied along with it. i am seeing significant improvement over the the old firmware.
1. share port works like a charm. Printer detection and connect is trouble free.
2. it stays connected properly. no more drop connections and also manual reboot of the router to recognize drivers.
At last my 655 is fully functional for now.. I need to check using my mac book..
It’s always good to hear from someone who has been able to get theirs to work properly. Gives hope for the rest of us.

I downloaded this but don’t see an osx version of the software?
I haven’t been able to find one related to the new firmware either, try using the latest version of SX Virtual Link for OSX.

Sounds like it’s still a bit buggy then, it only fixes a few problems, hopefully they release a new firmware soon that has some fixes.

Hi all,
I am new to this shareport feature, and was wondering if someone can SPECIFICLY explain how to go about installing this. I just want to be able to print from my HP Pavillion and MacBook Pro.
I currently have:
DIR-655
Firmware Ver.: 1.32NA
Hardware Ver.: A4
I have gone to the dlink website and read on how to install it, but is still unclear to me. I didn’t want to play around with my router since it is working perfectly. Can someone clearly explain step-by-step on how to install the shareport feature please and thanks! It will be much appriciated!
They released 1.33NA now. I’m going to try it and see if it fixes anything.

I believe it can only be used with the DIR-635 firmware, according to the D-link website the firmware hasn’t been updated for 4 years. http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DIR-635
